MAESTRAS & MAESTROS
MEZCALEROS
These masters are not only the creators
of this iconic drink but also act as contemporary alchemists whose skills and wisdom have
been passed down through generations for centuries. Each step in the mezcal-making process bears
the unique character of each of them.
Their own identity, closely linked to the rich traditions
of local cultures, is thus transmitted in their liquid art. Mezcal has had a long history, having been despised
and banned by the ruling Spanish crown since
its earliest days. By illegally producing mezcal,
the maestros mezcaleros expressed their defiance
against Spanish colonisation and their resentment against efforts to reshape their own culture.
The importance of traditional mezcal production stems from its reverence for the agave plant, which played a key role for indigenous peoples not only in
everyday life but also in ritual life.
